"I think Real Madrid has a certain mystique to it," Cucurella explained. "It's unpredictable, and I think it's been seen many times in their historic comebacks."
Cucurella had been with Chelsea for four years and had considered it his home. However, he felt that it was time for a new challenge. He expressed his gratitude to Chelsea for the opportunities they provided him and his family.
"I can come back to my country and play for one of the best clubs in the world," Cucurella said. "It was not an easy decision, but it was the right one for me and my family."
Cucurella will remain with Spain for the duration of their World Cup campaign before returning to Real Madrid for pre-season training under new manager Jose Mourinho.
