The game, SOCOM, was played on the PlayStation Portable by Rooney and several of his teammates, including Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick, John O'Shea, and Wes Brown. The game was a five-versus-five battle, and Rooney believes it helped the team develop their communication skills.
"We used to play it on the plane, on the team bus," Rooney said. "It was a big part of our success. Ask any of those players, and they'll agree it was a key factor in our success."
Rooney also mentioned that not all of his teammates were fans of the game. Michael Carrick was a more laid-back player who would often sneak around the map, while Rooney was more aggressive in his approach. The team's goalkeeper, Edwin van der Sar, wasn't a fan of the game and would often get frustrated with the noise and commotion it caused on the team bus.
"He'd get annoyed because we'd be shouting on the bus, telling each other where we were and what we were doing," Rooney said. "He'd try to get as far away from us as possible."
