Roma had entered the match on the back of two hard-fought 1-0 victories to start the campaign, while Torino had struggled to find the back of the net in Serie A this term. As a result, a goalless first half was perhaps unsurprising as both teams struggled to create meaningful scoring opportunities.
The two sides managed just three shots on target between them, and none were particularly threatening. Roma appeared to have a more cohesive plan, with their two best chances – headers from Gianluca Mancini and Mario Hermoso – forcing Torino goalkeeper Franco Israel into comfortable saves.
Meanwhile, Torino struggled to find their footing, with Giovanni Simeone's shot from distance drifting wide of the post. The team's lack of creativity was evident in their first-half performance.
At the interval, Gian Piero Gasperini attempted to inject some energy into the game by introducing Tommaso Baldanzi and Evan Ferguson. The two players had a couple of half-chances, but it was Torino who ultimately capitalized on their opportunities.
Simeone was the architect of Torino's winning goal, driving into the Roma half and playing a delayed one-two with Cyril Ngonge before curling an effort into the far corner from outside the penalty area.
Roma responded with a few half-chances, including a shot from Matías Soul that just evaded the top corner. However, Torino looked more threatening, particularly in the final 20 minutes of the game.
Despite trailing, Roma struggled to control the tempo in the final stages. Torino, on the other hand, looked dangerous, and a bit more precision in their end product may have sealed the win even earlier.
Although Roma applied some pressure in injury time, Simeone's lovely strike was ultimately all that was needed to secure the three points and end a streak of four consecutive away Serie A defeats.
This result marked Roma's first home loss in 14 such encounters. They will need to move on quickly, given their upcoming Derby della Capitale match against Lazio next Sunday.
