Szoboszlai, a Hungarian midfielder, has made a successful transition to right-back, impressing fans and coaches alike. He has played in four of his six games across all competitions for Liverpool at right-back, scoring a notable free kick in a 1-0 win over Arsenal.
The team's new signing, Florian Wirtz, was expected to play in the same position as Szoboszlai last season, but Wirtz has had some issues since joining, making it unlikely he'll be dropped from the starting lineup anytime soon. However, his lack of creative output has led manager Arne Slot to experiment with Szoboszlai at right-back.
It all began when Frimpong's debut was cut short due to an injury against Bournemouth. Wataru Endo and Joe Gomez played short spells at right-back during the closing stages of that game. Szoboszlai was then given the opportunity to play in the position for a trip to St James' Park and has since played four of his six games at right-back.
Szoboszlai's role at right-back is similar to Alexander-Arnold's, providing long passes and diagonal switches, while also showing his ability to deliver direct passes through the lines. In the game against Arsenal, he impressed with 10 passes into the final third, five accurate long balls, and a goal-scoring free kick.
Some may assume his defensive play is lacking, but against Arsenal, he effectively defended against Gabriel Martinelli, limiting the Brazilian to just 15 touches and one pass into the final third. Szoboszlai also had six clearances, five recoveries, and two ground duels won.
Szoboszlai's high work rate has been a key factor in his success at right-back. Manager Slot praised his work rate, saying, "Dom's work-rate is unbelievable. He just keeps on running with the highest intensity, and that is so important for a team that wants to compete."
Szoboszlai has shown a willingness to learn and adapt, saying after the win over Arsenal, "I play where he puts me. I try to give my best and help the team." He has played right-back in several games, including the Champions League defeat to Galatasaray, where he committed a foul that led to a penalty.
Despite this, he remained the most accurate passer among players who played 45 minutes or more in that game. If Slot continues to use Szoboszlai at right-back, he will need to continue to put in the time and effort to improve his defensive skills.
After a summer of uncertainty, it seems that Szoboszlai has found his place in the team, and Wirtz and Frimpong may need to be concerned about their positions in the squad.
