Rothen has taken issue with de Zerbi's recent statements about Rabiot.

In an interview, Rothen said, "Character cannot be bought... He had the opportunity to be classy. Last year, he talked about Rabiot's professionalism and personality, but also his character."

Rothen continued, "He loved the man he was, so how can you go from a guy you practically idolize to saying 'it's a blessing in disguise, the team is stronger today'?"

Rothen expressed his surprise at de Zerbi's explanation that the team improved after Rabiot's departure, citing the disagreement and lack of respect as reasons.
