Going into the game, Chelsea aimed to avoid a second loss to a Brazilian team in the CWC. The match began with both teams creating scoring opportunities, but it was Chelsea's Cole Palmer who broke the deadlock in the 16th minute. Palmer remained composed to slot the ball into the bottom-left corner after a precise first touch.
As the first half progressed, Chelsea dominated the game, with Palmeiras struggling to contain their attacks. One notable chance came when Christopher Nkunku had space inside the penalty area, but his effort sailed over the bar.
Palmeiras had a golden opportunity to equalize just before halftime, but a brilliant save from Robert Sanchez denied Vanderlan's header towards the top-left corner.
Palmeiras started the second half strongly and were rewarded with a goal shortly after halftime. Ironically, it was Estevao, a Chelsea-bound teenager, who scored with a stunning strike that found the back of the net past a rooted Sanchez.
Palmeiras continued to grow in confidence and had another chance to take the lead with just over an hour played, but Allan's strike across the goal trickled agonizingly wide of the left post.
As the game approached its closing stages, the tension grew, but Chelsea managed to secure a fortunate winner with seven minutes left to play. Malo Gusto's cross, which was deflected by Bruno Fuchs, wrong-footed Weverton, allowing the ball to bobble over the goal line.
Although Weverton made a late save by pushing Noni Madueke's strike onto the post, it was ultimately too little, too late for Palmeiras. Chelsea secured their place in the semi-finals, where they will face another Brazilian team, Fluminense.
